1. The Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps

The latest "Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps" list by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) was just published for March 2025. This is a more recent version of the list they published six months ago.

Here’s the list of the top 50 Gen AI web products by unique monthly visits.

And here’s a list of the top 50 Gen AI mobile apps by unique monthly visits

What does this mean for leaders?

There are a few interesting takeaways from the article:

1. New AI product growth is still insane

Nearly 34 percent of the companies that made this AI web products list are brand new (when compared to the list from 6 months ago).

This means that the competitive landscape is still moving at an insanely fast pace (the previous list also had 30 percent new companies entering from the prior one), and the expectation is that we’ll see more new players make the top 100 going forward.

DeepSeek, the Chinese rival, didn’t exist 6 months ago and is now second(!) after ChatGPT.

2. ChatGPT still reigns

ChatGPT tops both the web and mobile app lists so it is still the main contender even though others have been catching up.

To give you an idea of how fast ChatGPT grew:

  • November 2023: 100 million weekly active users

  • August 2024: 200 million weekly active users

  • February 2025 400 million weekly active users

It’s actually growing faster now than it was when it launched in November 2022 (almost doubling in the last 6 months alone).

3. Higher monthly users does not equal more revenue

Although ChatGPT is a winner on the revenue side as well, the same cannot be said about other apps on the list.

In fact, many AI apps that were not in the top 100 are still making a lot of money. One example is an app called “Speak” - an AI tool that helps users with language learning.

4. Quick AI News: Things You Should Know

  • OpenAI just released GPT 4.5, and is considering charging up to $20,000 per month for AI agents in the near future

  •  Wharton released a new study about prompt engineering. The takeaway is that there is no takeaway. AI benchmarking and prompting effectiveness depend on context and goals, so there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

  • Ethan Mollick wrote a great article about the new generation of AI models: Antrhopic’s Claude 3.7 and xAI’s Grok 3
