1. It’s Not the AI Models: It’s You
Today’s real divide in AI isn’t between how different AI models compete with each other, but between how well users can use them.
The Neuron and The Algorithmic Bridge recently talked about this idea, and I thought it was spot on.
While AI models are becoming similar in performance, the gap between expert and novice users is widening.
So the ability to ask the right questions (via good prompt engineering techniques) and to refine AI outputs is becoming more important than simply choosing the best model.
Here’s a great chart by Alberto Romero that explains this visually.

In other words, the skill of asking the right questions is becoming more crucial than simply choosing the best AI tool.
So the most successful AI users are those who enhance their domain expertise with AI by applying its use within their field.
What can you do about this? Two things. First, continue to invest in AI training (and, more specifically, prompt engineering training) for your employees. And second, focus on AI as it applies to your specific industry or function (vs. using it as a general tool).

2. Don’t Forget About the “Jagged Technological Frontier”
Several articles ago, I referenced an important concept in the AI world called the “jagged technological frontier.”
Today, it’s more relevant than ever, especially with new models advancing.
What is the “Jagged Technological Frontier?”
Ethan Mollick, gives a great explanation here.
But here’s a quick overview.
In simple terms, think of tasks that AI can easily do, and tasks that AI cannot easily do.
The frontier is a line that separates those two.
If you are within the frontier, then AI works great as a tool (produces accurate results).
If you’re outside of the frontier, then AI is not-so-great as a tool (i.e., produces inaccurate results).
The problem is that this frontier is “jagged” and invisible (i.e., the fact that some tasks that you think AI would be good at turns out to be untrue, and vice versa).
Here’s a screenshot from a paper that Mollick co-authored that explains this visually.

The frontier is also growing every day, so it’s hard to nail down where that border is.
The takeaway? We have to continuously be careful about the limitations of AI because that frontier is tricky.
